Rumor Has It: A Chicken in Every Pot

 

Synopsis

This activity introduces the concepts of advertising and spin in political elections.Students will explore a New York Times advertisement that caused presidential candidate Herbert Hoover’s opponents to state that he had actually promised voters a chicken in every pot and two cars in every garage during the campaign of 1928. Students will analyze this historical document to determine where this rumor came from.
